Sports Complex Cell Site Design
Blue Valley Sports Complex
Overland Park, KS
The Cell Site Design for this issue is a project
that involved replacing two baseball field light poles with concrete
monopoles at the Blue Valley Sports Activity Complex located
at 10399 West 133rd Street in Overland Park, Kansas.
Due to zoning restrictions and the large amount of homes in the
area, the City required T-Mobile® and Nextel® to
replace the light poles with concrete monopoles that would support
two sets of antennas as well as the light standards used for
lighting the ball field.
The 120-foot concrete monopoles were manufactured by Rohn using
a unique concrete spinning process that allows the poles to be
hollow in the center for the coaxial cable, and also contributes
to the high strength of the concrete. The monopoles were installed
using the
"direct bury" method, which required the use of a crane
to support them in place for 24 hours.
The Blue Valley School District required that all equipment be
placed within buildings that looked like the existing ticket
booths and concession stands located throughout the complex.
SSC designed brick buildings with pitched roofs made of materials
that matched the existing buildings.
The coaxial cable was run underground from the buildings to the
monopoles. Manholes were constructed next to the monopoles allowing
easy access to the coaxial cable.
The unique project was a great success and the City, the School
District, and clients involved were very pleased with the results.
